Primary Election
The Primary Election is an election to determine which candidates will qualify for the General Election for a given party. In Iowa you must be a member of the political party of which you wish to vote for in order to participate. This is known as a "closed primary." The primary election is held on the 1st Tuesday following the 1st Monday in June of each even-numbered year.

2022 County Candidate Filing Deadlines for Primary and General Election

County Offices on 2022 Primary and General Election:      

Board of Supervisors (1), County Attorney, County Recorder and

County Treasurer

County Non-Partisan Offices on 2022 General Election:

                        Soil and Water Conservation District Commissioners (2)

                                    Soil & Water – To Fill A Vacancy Position (1)

                        Agricultural Extension Council (5)

County Nomination Petitions and Affidavit of Candidacy Papers are filed in the Auditor’s Office.

June 7, 2022 Primary Election          

Filing period for candidates to be on the Primary Election ballot begins March 7th and ends March 25th at 5:00 PM.  (This applies to candidates running for County Offices under party affiliation of Democrat or Republican) Minimum nomination petition signatures required: 75

County Candidate Withdrawal Deadline - March 30th

County Candidate Objection Deadline - April 1st

County Candidate Substitution Deadline for political parties - April 4th

County Candidate Objection Deadline for Substitute Candidates - April 5th

November 8, 2022 General Election

Filing period for NPPO/Nominated by Petition Candidates to be on the General Election ballots begins March 7th and ends March 25th at 5:00 PM. (This applies to NPPO candidates and candidates nominated by petition without any party affiliation and not considered Democrat or Republican) Minimum nomination petition signatures required: 75

Filing period for Soil & Water Conservation District Commissioner candidates and Ag Extension candidates on the General Election ballot Ends August 31st at 5:00 PMSoil & Water Nomination petition and Ag Extension Nomination petition signatures required: 25

Federal and State Candidates:

US Senator, US Representative, Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of Agriculture, Secretary of State, State Auditor, State Treasurer, and State Representative (District 95 & 99) filing period begins February 28th and ends March 18th, regardless of affiliation.  Papers are filed with the Iowa Secretary of State’s Office.

 

ABSENTEE BALLOT INFORMATION

Absentee ballot request forms can be submitted to the Des Moines County Auditor's Office beginning March 29th. According to Iowa Code - if a request form is received prior to 70 days before election day it shall be returned to the requestor. 
Absentee ballots ready - First day absentee ballots may be voted in the Auditor's Office - May 18th. This is also the first day an absentee ballot can be mailed.
Voter Pre-Registration Deadline and Last Day to request an absentee ballot to be mailed deadline - May 23rd at 5PM
Last day to request and vote an absentee ballot in-person at the Auditor's Office - June 6th
